Concussions happen every day, according to the Brain Injury Association of America, a brain injury happens every 9 seconds in America. Many of those brain injuries are considered mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), or what we commonly call concussions.
While a concussion is classified as a “mild traumatic brain injury” (mTBI), we know what is considered “mild” to one person can be severe to another person. Regardless of injury severity, recovery post-concussion (or any other brain injury) is possible when you get the right care, at the right time, delivered in the right way.
Currently, the most common way to diagnosis a concussion is through the identification of symptoms and the method of injury. Concussions are usually caused by sudden hits or jolts to the head and/or neck, this results in the brain moving around in the skull. Concussions occur in sports & recreation, falls at home or work, car accidents, domestic violence and any other type of movement where the head is affected.
Depending on a variety of factors, most concussions are not life threatening, and most adults who sustain a concussion have symptoms subsiding within 10-14 days. The problem highlighted in a 2018 survey estimated that between 11.4% and 38.7% of people who have concussions DON’T get better and are at-risk of developing persistent concussion symptoms or post-concussion syndrome (PCS). We are glad 61.3% - 88.6% of people will recover without delay. We are committed to ensuring 100% of people bounce back after a concussion so we develop specifically tailored programs to help ensure the 11.4% - 38.7% of people at-risk of developing PCS have their best opportunity to get better.
If you (or someone you know) experiences the lingering effects of a concussion the symptoms will be most noticeable in one or more of these areas: physical fatigue, sensitivity to light/noise, cognitive/thinking barriers, sleep challenges, and mood/behavioral changes.
At BRN we ask ourselves all the time “are we delivering the best care and rehab?”. It's weird to talk about ourselves, but it's important consumers (people receiving services and insurers paying for services) know they are getting the greatest value for their time, effort and money.
